The mouth is rarely the first place clinicians look when managing respiratory infections in the ICU. Yet the evidence is clear — and so are the results when oral health becomes a structured part of critical care.

With over 30 years of experience in dentistry — the last 13 dedicated exclusively to hospital settings — I have built my practice around the most complex and immunologically vulnerable patients: those with critically ill, oncological, transplant, and haematological conditions. This is not a transition into hospital care. This has been my world for over a decade.

I currently serve as Head of Dental Services at Complexo Américas (Rede Américas) and Staff Dentist at Hospital Estadual da Criança, with active clinical involvement in medical and surgical ICUs, semi-intensive care units, autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, CAR-T-Cell therapy, liver and kidney transplantation, and the care of medically complex patients.

My clinical foundation in Oral Medicine shapes how I approach every case — through diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of oral conditions that carry systemic consequences. As a Hospital Dentistry Specialist with laser therapy certification, I work at the interface where oral health directly affects patient safety, infection risk, and treatment outcomes.

Respiratory infection control in critical care is where this work becomes most consequential. Mechanically ventilated patients, immunosuppressed by disease or treatment, face compounded risks when oral health is not actively managed. Designing and implementing protocols that address this gap — in collaboration with multidisciplinary ICU teams — is a central focus of my current clinical and academic work.

My Master’s research in Medical Sciences and an MBA in Leadership, Management and Innovation reflect a deliberate choice: to integrate clinical expertise with the systemic thinking that complex hospital environments demand.
